People Person, Always: A Look Into Damar’s Journey

30 Apr 2025 / Author: Stefany Chandra
Some people are natural communicators—you can just tell. With Damar Anjar, BIKO's Head of Public Relations, it’s even deeper than that. He doesn’t just talk; he connects. And as we sat down for a long conversation with him, we began to understand why. In this article, we explore what connection and communication really mean from Damar's POV—and why they matter so much in a people-first, hospitality-driven F&B world like BIKO’s.

Damar’s story begins at home, where his father, a journalist, exposed him to the power of storytelling, while his mother, a stay-at-home single mom, shaped his appreciation for connection. Damar and his siblings would follow her around the kitchen, helping with meals—an experience that went beyond food. These formative years, surrounded by stories and meals, laid the groundwork for his deep belief that true communication isn’t just about words. It’s about fostering genuine, meaningful connections.

Naturally, this foundation led him to pursue a degree in Marketing Communication during his university years, where he grew even more passionate about understanding how people relate and communicate. Before stepping into the corporate world, Damar explored different mediums, from freelance photography to starting his own digital agency. Looking back, it’s clear that for him, communication has always been the constant thread—whether through a lens, a well-thought-out strategy, or a carefully chosen word.

As we talked, he told us how he ended up at BIKO. Turns out, it all happened rather organically. While working as a photographer, he frequently shot events at BIKO, which gave him a chance to connect with the place. He got to know the vibe, the people, and the overall rhythm of how things ran. It wasn’t long before friends in marketing recognized his potential and nudged him in the right direction. Eventually, he made the leap and joined the team as a Public Relations officer.

When Damar came on board in 2022, the PR division was still in its infancy. Everything was new, and much of it, he had to figure out on his own. His first assignment was at Beer Garden, where he admits he gathered a fair share of personal stories. But it was at Duck Down Bar where Damar truly found his stride. The music, the energy, the community—it all clicked. We could tell Duck Down held a special place for him. It wasn’t just about managing PR; it was where he really built his PR chops and where his understanding of people came together.

As Damar continues to grow in his role, what excites him most about the world of Public Relations is the chance to meet new people everyday. But even more than that, he embraces the challenges. Every new problem is a lesson, and that’s something we really admire about him. Those had shaped how he handles situations now: quicker, calmer, more efficiently. Watching him in action, you’d think he was born for this.

Fast forward to now, and Damar has taken on a whole new challenge: leading the development of the BIKO Membership App. After a full year of research and development, the app officially launched in early 2025. For him (and us too), it’s not just a digital product, but a bridge—a way to bring BIKO and its customers closer together. At its core, the app is designed to strengthen that connection. It allows customers to collect and redeem points at any BIKO outlet, creating a unified system that rewards loyalty while encouraging a sense of community. It’s not just about perks—it’s about making people feel seen, appreciated, and involved. Damar calls it a “never-ending journey,” and honestly, that feels right.

But out of everything we talked about, one thing he said really stuck with us was this.
“One value I always carry with me is to never choose who’s ‘worth’ talking to. You never know what you might learn from someone. Sure, sometimes people just don’t click—and that’s okay. But if you approach people with an open heart, the chance to truly connect is so much greater. Communication takes practice, but when it’s part of who you are, it doesn’t feel like work or responsibility. It feels natural. It feels human.”

While he’s out there bridging gaps, leading new projects, and helping shape the future of BIKO, he’s still right here—listening, observing, and constantly looking for ways to make things better. And knowing him, the best is definitely yet to come.
